Research data management: a briefing
Research data management is about good research practice. Research data comes in many forms and this lunchtime briefing will cover principles that apply to all types of data including annotations on texts, scanned images, notes and observations, pictures, sound as well as spreadsheets. The purpose of research data management is to enable researchers to create high quality research that is reliable, reproducible and retrievable. Greater emphasis is being placed on research data as an output and increasingly Governments and Funders have the expectation that data, created through research they have funded, will be made available for future research.
This briefing will provide:-
•An overview of research data management and how it links to good research practice that will have application in all disciplines;
•Highlight general principles on how to manage your research data dealing with areas including implications in your choice of software, storage locations, file formats etc;
•Outline areas that a Data Management Plan should cover including deposit, dissemination and sharing, and making reference to the University of Southampton Research Data Management Policy and other significant University funders.
At the end of the briefing you should be aware of the key aspects of research data management.
